Online Gambling – The Games by Kenneth Bateman

Slots are composed of spinning reels with an assortment of symbols on each reel. Bets are based upon which slot the ball will land when the wheel stops spinning. Bingo!

A small, marble-like ball is placed into a spinning wheel that has red and black numbered slots. The right combination of symbols must be aligned with the payline in order to win. Low house edge is of advantage to the player.

Roulette

Played against the casino’s software and not against other players.

Online casinos offer a multitude of gambling game options designed to appeal to the adventurous or the conservative player. The shooter is a winner if point is made on follow up rolls. Shooter must roll a seven or eleven on the come-out, or first roll to win or establish a point. Blackjack is played against the house, and not other players.

Literally thousands of betting options. If a seven is rolled before point is made, the shooter loses. The following is an overview of some of the more popular online games, both multi-player and single player, and is not intended to be a tutorial. In poker you are playing against other players, and not against the house. Among the most popular poker games to play online are:

- Seven Card Stud

- Jacks or Better (most popular)

Craps

Video Poker

Blackjack

- Joker’s Wild

Poker

- Texas Hold ‘Em (by far the most popular)

Eleven balls are drawn from a pool of thirty. A two, three or twelve is an automatic loser on the come-out roll.

The total value of two dealt cards must not exceed nine. The hand with the total value closest to nine wins. Face cards are valued at ten and aces at one or eleven at the players option. Keno is one of those games, and is really the casino version of a lottery draw. The slot machine’s reels are lined up on what is known as a payline. There are countless books and online sites detailing game rules, strategies, etc., and it is suggested the player take advantage of these before attempting to play for money.

As you would expect, games of pure chance, with no skills required by the player offer terrible odds.

Video

Poker entails examining your hand and guessing what your opponents have. In Keno a computer randomly selects numbers from a group of eighty and the player must guess which group will be chosen.

Slots are the most popular of the no skills required online casino games, and is a veritable cash cow for the casinos, with the odds firmly stacked in favor of the house. Among the many sub-categories of betting on roulette are: betting on which color the ball will land, betting on any one of the three columns on the roulette table, or betting on a specific set of twelve numbers.

Baccarat

Also known as “twenty-one” as the cumulative total of the face value of the cards cannot exceed twenty one to win. If the symbols are not aligned in a winning combination, you lose.

10 Tips for Betting on Football

To be a successful sports bettor you need to operate with a clear mind.”

6. There is a wealth of information on the Internet; it is just up to you to find it and research it daily.”

Moseman agrees and especially likes home underdogs. Otherwise, you’re better off doing your own research.”

But even though the math says it’s virtually impossible to win on a consistent basis, Americans continue to bet on football. “Because alcohol clouds your judgment and usually helps you to make rash decisions you usually wouldn’t otherwise make. “For example, if you have a $1,000 bankroll for the season, you should generally bet no more than $50 a game.”

So, how much should you bet a game?

Ted Sevransky, a well-known Las Vegas gambler and sports consultant with Sportsmemo.com, agrees.

But that doesn’t mean you have to bet like a “square” and throw away your hard-earned money.

“The biggest mistake that amateur bettors make is they increase their bets when they are losing,” Sevransky says.

“In an average season, fewer than one bettor in twelve turns a profit,” Gordon says. But, when you’re struggling, that’s when you want to reduce your bet size until you get out of your slump. Not all games work according to this formula, but it is usually a good rule of thumb.”

10.

“Most people with an understanding of football gambling bet between 3 percent and 5 percent of their bankroll, increasing when they win and reducing when they lose,” Vaccaro says.

“A square is the average, unsophisticated gambler whose decision making is based on hunches, media manipulation, or spurious systems that cannot overcome the bookmaker’s inherent mathematical advantage,” Konik explains. If you like an underdog, it is best to get your bet in as late as possible, where there is heavy action from squares on favorites.

1. These books change their numbers according to the betting patterns of their customers, so it is not entirely uncommon to find two or three point differences in the lines.”

4. “As for me, the best bet in football is betting the point spread or over/under totals on individual games.

So, is it possible for the average square to become a little sharper in making football bets this season? According to professionals like Vacarro, Konik and Gordon, amateur bettors have the best chance to win if they demonstrate a little patience and follow the 10 basic tips below. And why not? We have unconditional love for the sport and betting $50 or $100 on a game adds an extra rush of adrenaline. Big underdogs often find ways to cover the spread and they rarely give up toward the end of a game in front of the home crowd.”

2. They use powerful computers that can process millions of bits of data and produce a more accurate point-spread line than the bookmakers.”

“The talking heads on TV know nothing about sports betting,” says Sevransky. Shop For Numbers – “Another important aspect of betting on football is shopping for the best number,” Moseman explains.

“There is probably no better bet in sports than playing an underdog at home,” Moseman says. Avoid Exotic Bets – “For very skilled handicappers, with a proven track record, there can, at least in theory, be value in betting parlays,” says Gordon on the type of bet that combines two or more individual wagers. The payout is just the same as far as he is concerned. “Teams play inspired ball at home. “Over the course of several seasons, the percentage of bettors who turn a profit is minuscule.”

Certainly not back into the pockets of the average bettor. Money Management – “This is without a doubt the most important aspect of betting on sports and possibly the most neglected,” says Morey “Doc” Moseman, a professional gambler and sports consultant with DocSports.com for nearly 40 years. “In trying to bamboozle potential customers, many services make claims about having scouts all over the country that give them inside information and promise 70 or even 80 percent winners, as if the bookmakers were the biggest suckers in the world. Oakland comes to mind) seem like the Super Bowl. He loses year after year, according to Dan Gordon, a top football handicapper and author of How to Beat the Sports Books (Cardoza Publishing 2005). “The sharps are usually members of a betting syndicate privy to the most up-to-date information on injuries, weather, game plans, and, most important, the real power of the teams involved. If North Texas is his best bet on a Saturday then that is his bet. . If you want advice about sports betting, find someone who has a successful track record. In fact, sports bettors must pick 52.4 percent winners just to break even.”

However, Konik adds that there are some bettors who actually know how to beat the bookies. “Most people prefer to bet on the ‘better’ team, the one that will probably win the game. Avoid Chasing Bets – “Don’t do it! There is no worse way to mismanage your bankroll than to chase your bets after a losing day,” cautions Moseman on the dangerous practice of trying to immediately win back your losses.

And remember, in the immortal words of “Fast” Eddie Felson, “Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.”

7.

9. There are almost an infinite number of scenarios that can happen in a single football game.

“The bookies fear and despise a tiny coterie of professional bettors known as ‘the sharps,’” Konik says.

“A square or recreational player might have a vague plan, but after two Corona’s he will definitely run to the window and make a hasty decision on the USC-Notre Dame game because he wants to be involved in the party atmosphere,” Vaccaro says. “He is not jaded by teams and does not bet with his heart. “The key to proper money management is to be sure not to bet more than you can afford to lose.”

So, how much are we gambling each football season?

Betting on football games; whether it’s through a local bookie, an offshore Internet site or a Nevada casino (still the only legal place in America to make football bets), most of us have done it or know of someone who has. The only touts bettors should consider are the ones who talk about the long haul and realistic winning percentages, which are in the upper 50 percent to lower 60 percent range.”

Another difference between squares and sharps is how they approach betting on game day.

Newspapers and popular sports sites routinely publish the lines or point spreads for games, and football insiders offer their picks to viewers each week on ESPN and other cable networks. Bet at the Right Time – “The sharp bettors tend to bet underdogs, and they tend to bet them early,” Moseman says. “Common wisdom says that over the course of a long football season the average man or woman will pick approximately 50 percent winners.

“The standard bet requires gamblers to lay $11 for every $10 they want to win with the extra $1 or 10 percent known as the juice,” Konik says. “If you listen to their advice, you are sure to lose. So underdogs tend to be slightly undervalued – except by the sharps.”

“A sharp or smart has a plan of what he wants to do,” says Vaccaro, the director of sports operations and public relations at Lucky’s Race and Sports Book in Las Vegas. Giving 11 to 10 odds is almost always the cheapest price you can give.”

While these tips don’t guarantee you’re going to win, hopefully they can make you a little less square and a little more sharp in your picks this season. “In the NFL, a game will often be totally turned around by one or two plays, or even a single penalty. Chasing losses is the fastest way to the poor house.”

And where does all that money go?

5.

3. Focus on Conferences – “The best way to win money betting football is to develop a niche and follow it closely,” Moseman advises. The only locks that exist are those that need keys to open them.”

Michael Konik, a sports writer and best-selling author of The Smart Money (Simon & Schuster 2006), explains why it is so hard for the recreational gambler to win at betting on football. Research Football Services – “Most sports services realize that most people who sign up with them are insecure,” Gordon warns. Also, being “in action” can make a dull late-afternoon game (Buffalo vs.

Even Hollywood is not immune – think Two for the Money with Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey.

Also, it’s probably a good idea to disregard advice from the myriad of ex-players and football experts you see on television each week. “Thus, the bookies love and cherish the squares.”

Although exact figures are impossible to calculate, according to Jimmy Vaccaro, widely considered to be Las Vegas’ most influential bookmaker, Americans probably wager more than $50 billion a year on NFL and college football combined. “If you become an expert on a smaller conference like the WAC, you have a good chance to beat the house because sports book operators do not have the time or resources to follow this conference the way you can. Consider Underdogs – “In the long-run, it’s easier to win betting on the underdog,” Konik says. “Squares usually bet later in the week and they tend to pick the favorites.

8. Drinking and Gambling Don’t Mix – “There is a reason the casinos in Las Vegas supply you with free drinks while you are gambling,” Moseman says. “There will be more discrepancy in the numbers at different sports books. The NFL, for example, will have very similar numbers at most of the betting shops you visit. On college you will be able to find different lines at different sports books. Slim underdogs regularly win outright. “When you’re in a good rhythm and winning, you want to increase your bets. Locks Don’t Exist – “Anyone who has watched sports for about a month realizes that the difference between winning and losing, especially against the spread, can be infinitesimally small,” Gordon says. If you are going to go with a favorite, it is best to place your bet early in the week when the sharps are laying heavy money on the points. Thanks to the juice, the only one who profits in this scenario is the bookmaker. He is not taken in by being involved in USC-Notre Dame just because it is the biggest watched game of the day

7 Best Spring Break Vacation Ideas for the Broke College Student

It’s just about getting some good friends together to get away from home and do some adventuring together. The beaches here are great and the weather is already warm in early spring so you can have that traditional beach vacation without having to go to Mexico. People who were planning to go to Mexico for Spring Break but who have been warned away are turning their sights towards the Bahamas. However, the economy is so tight that some college kids are thinking twice about whether or not they should be splurging on Spring Break travel.

Those aren’t the only options for the college student who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money, of course. This means that the road trip is a great option for people who don’t have a lot of money and don’t really care too much what you’re doing together. You’ve got the warm water beaches that you’d get in Mexico but you’re still in the U.S. You’ll want to shop around for the best deals on airfare and hotels, limit your spending on drinking by doing most of it as pre-drinking at your hotel and focus on doing free activities like the beach, window shopping in the Gaslamp and wandering through Balboa Park.

5. Vegas. Depending on where you’re coming from, a trip to San Diego can be really affordable. Spending money on tickets to see big shows like Cirque de Soleil, paying too much to get into some of the nicer clubs and choosing a fancy hotel are all quick ways that college kids end up losing money in Vegas. However, with safety warnings issued for that area because of social and political unrest throughout the country, that’s certainly not the way to go for your 2009 Spring Break. Look around and see what’s out there in ski destinations that are cheap to get to near you.

The usual solution for college kids in this position has traditionally been to do a Mexican Spring Break trip. Not everyone thinks of Spring Break and thinks of the beach. Sometimes the college Spring Break isn’t really about where you go or what you do. People who like winter sports will find that there are some good deals on ski packages at various resort destinations throughout the United States because it is getting close to the end of the season. There are some great last minute hotel and flight package deals that make it a really affordable place to travel for Spring Break. So what do you do?

2. Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here are seven Spring Break ideas that should be affordable:

7. Road trips. However, for those of-age groups that are able to be responsible with their spending on a trip, a Vegas Spring Break can actually be really affordable and a lot of fun. It’s not just the gambling tables that will get you either. It’s still really cold in some parts of the United States which means that it’s a great time to get in one last big ski vacation before the ski season comes to an end. Commit to going to the cheapest clubs, doing most of your drinking for free while playing penny slots and spending a lot of time just lounging by the pool of your hotel and you should find that this is a good Spring Break trip that’s still affordable.

1. Bahamas. Whatever you end up doing, be safe while you’re having your Spring Break fun!. This has always been a big Spring Break destination and this year is no exception. The adventure of cheap travel is where the fun is really at!

3. South Padre Island, Texas. You can get good deals on airline and hotel packages if you shop around, especially if you’re willing to stay somewhere off of The Strip. This is definitely a favorite place for broke college kids seeking to stay in America for their Spring Break this year.

Spring break is just about upon us and that usually means that college kids are packing their bags and heading off to party together on the beach. Traveling to this area tends to be easy for a lot of people in the United States because it’s kind of centralized down south. so you don’t have all of that political unrest to worry about. This one is also tough because it’s really not a good place to go if you’ve got people in your group who are under 21. Do some shopping around to find the cheapest places to stay and things to do, of course, but rest easy knowing that this is one of the most affordable Spring Break vacations available this year.

4. San Diego. Another place that people are heading instead of Mexico this year is Buenos Aires. This one is one that you should be careful with because it’s really easy to spend a whole lot more money than you planned on spending in Vegas. 6. Ski vacations. There’s a lot to see and do here and it’s not all that expensive. You’ll want to do a lot of shopping around to make sure that you’re getting a good deal but once you get that taken care of you’ll be able to just enjoy your Spring Break vacation on those beautiful beaches.

If you’re in the position of wanting to take a Spring Break trip with friends but not wanting to spend a lot of money then you still have some options. If you’re looking for an active vacation with a lot of guided tours for your group then this is probably one of the most affordable options out there. Pool your resources, hit the road and see where it takes you before you’ve got to come back to school. Getting away on a camping trip, playing tourist with your friends in your own hometown or getting a cheap ticket to Europe or Asia are all other options that you might look into for an affordable and fun 2009 Spring Break trip

Philadelphia conducting experiment to save gunshot victims

Zoe Maher, a Temple trauma surgeon, has been giving presentations at community forums.

The Temple surgeon patiently laid out her case, even as she acknowledged the selection process is “like the flip of a coin.” Retrospective studies, she said, have shown that gunshot and stabbing victims given basic life support – such as an oxygen mask, CPR or immobilization – had an 18 percentage-point survival advantage over those given advanced procedures, such as intubation, in an ambulance.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In all of last year, there were only 22 days when someone wasn’t shot in Philadelphia.

Organizers had to meet certain requirements before launching the study, including getting approval from city and hospital review boards that oversee research on humans, holding community meetings and informing a certain percentage of the public.

Maher, who is white, gave a 20-minute slideshow at a recent meeting in Hunting Park, a largely black and Hispanic neighborhood. “This might be a situation where more isn’t better.”

Philadelphians who don’t want to participate in the study if they are ever wounded can opt out by wearing wristbands indicating their wishes. Nearly 1 in 5 victims died.

Karen Maschke, a scholar at the Hastings Center, a medical ethics think tank in suburban New York City, said the experiment appears ethically sound.

And every resident of or visitor to Philadelphia could become a study subject, though the biggest effect will probably be in the most violent neighborhoods – poor, mostly black sections where people are skeptical of essentially being experimented on.

. They can obtain a wristband by filling out a form online or on paper.

“If this is not a public health crisis, I don’t know what is,” she said.

Joann Taylor, a block captain, retorted: “We’re already gambling with people’s lives.”

Normally, paramedics intubate patients to keep their airway open, and give IV fluids to counteract a drop in blood pressure. Patrick Reilly, trauma chief at Penn Presbyterian Hospital, a study partner, said doctors and society tend to think more is better.

Some paramedics have opted out of participating.

It is being headed by Temple University Hospital’s chief of surgery, Dr. But supporters of the study say that for victims who are bleeding through an open wound, these procedures may cause an increase in blood pressure that can accelerate blood loss and death.

During the study, paramedics treating adults who have been shot or stabbed in the torso will, on a random basis, not insert a tube down a victim’s throat or administer intravenous fluids – two traditional life-saving techniques some doctors say may actually harm such patients.

Yanitza Gonzalez, a councilwoman’s representative, chimed in: “It’s almost like we’re gambling with people’s lives.”

“You’re using people to do this study,” said Charles Lanier, head of a neighborhood revitalization group. It could end early if researchers are able to prove or disprove their theory sooner.

“All of the evidence we have points to us being right, but if we are wrong, we will end the study early,” Maher told the community group.

The study, involving all six of Philadelphia’s trauma hospitals, has been exempted from the Food and Drug Administration’s informed-consent rules, which require research subjects to be told the risks and benefits and to give permission in advance – something not feasible with gravely wounded people.

“Getting to the emergency room, where equipment and experts are waiting, is a really critical window, especially for people with any kind of wound that involves bleeding,” said Maschke, editor of the journal IRB: Ethics & Human Research. Of those victims, nearly 700 were black men ages 18 to 34.

Now, in a bold effort to stem the bloodshed, several Philadelphia hospitals are about to conduct a citywide experiment that will ask: When gunshot or stabbing victims are being rushed to the emergency room by ambulance, could paramedics do more to save them by doing less?

It’s a counterintuitive approach that could test long-held beliefs and change practices at trauma centers across the country.

“If we said we were going to give another medicine, people would tend to go, ‘Let’s see if this works,’” he said. As part of the process, Dr. Her audience was initially dubious.

For a generation, many Philadelphia police officers, instead of waiting for an ambulance, have been taking shooting and stabbing victims to the ER in their cruisers, a practice known as “scoop-and-run.” Data from the longstanding practice helped inform the surgeons proposing this study.

The study is expected to start in the fall and last five years, or until doctors have about 1,000 patients, whichever comes first. Amy Goldberg, who has treated thousands of shooting victims in the three decades she has worked in Philadelphia.

Temple has been working for five years to set up the study. “I hear what you’re saying, but in the interim, you’re still sacrificing somebody to prove which (method) is better.”

A version of this experimental approach is already in place.

Dr. “Sometimes that’s going to mean you can’t stop and ask people if it’s OK.”

Last year, there were 236 homicides in Philadelphia and more than 1,200 shootings, or one roughly every seven hours

5 myths of sports betting legalization

If something shady were to occur in a game around a betting proposition, raised awareness by the public about gambling in general would help highlight any improprieties before, during and after the match.

When I think about the best way to legalize sports gambling from a logistical standpoint, I get a headache. Since sports gambling is currently something that happens in the shadows, problem gamblers are likely to hide in that shadow until it is too late.

In addition, game fixing would be easier in a world where fewer people track or are even aware of things like point spreads and over/under bets. 4: It will damage the sports betting business in Las Vegas

Here’s an example. In the past two decades, although total revenue has risen, percentage of revenue from gambling has decreased from close to 60 percent to last year’s 38 percent. It’s a pretty reasonable assumption that it’s easier to fix a game in an environment where most of the money wagered is impossible to discover or track by the government. John McCain (R-Ariz.) also recently said that Congress needs to hold hearings to discuss legalizing sports betting.

Once games happen, the stats are public domain. Legalized sports betting would elevate these now somewhat esoteric notions into the mainstream conversation about sports. Yes, trademark images and logos would be a different story, so I could see the leagues getting marketing deals, but I don’t see that as a huge windfall for the leagues.

Until many of these questions are answered, it will be difficult to draw any hard conclusions about the ramifications of legalized sports gambling in the U.S. Many bookies will allow me to get more credit and continue to gamble. In addition, customers are far more inclined to place a wager when they don’t have to put any money down.

Since bookies will not have to pay taxes or licensing fees, they will be able to offer better margins or incentives to their customers. District Court Judge Mary Ann Medler ruled in favor of CBC, stating that “statistics are part of the public domain and can be used at no cost by fantasy companies.” One would infer that the same would apply to legal bookmaking operations.

I see the same trend happening if sports betting gets legalized in the U.S. In fact, there’s an argument that exposing more people to sports gambling in their native states will make the general concept of sports gambling more approachable, ultimately leading to a larger overall percentage of sports fans-turned-gamblers.

Myth No. However, there are certainly some myths that I believe can be dispelled.

“One of the things that makes sports betting so interesting is that it is probably by far the most widely participated in form of illegal gambling. This is the type of financial recklessness associated with problem gambling.

There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding legalization of sports gambling in the U.S., and it will be fascinating to watch how it unfolds in the next few years. Those who believe that legalized sports betting will lead to more risk of game fixing simply don’t understand why games are fixed. Are fewer people gambling because they can do it in their home state?

Myth No. (It’s common for bookies to offer rebates to their big customers.) This will be difficult for legal bookmakers to compete with.

The real value for them will be potential marketing dollars and increased fan engagement, not licensing fees for data or direct revenue from wagering.

Silver echoed this sentiment when discussing his personal revelation in an exclusive interview with ESPN. 1: It will result in large revenue for the leagues

At any rate, I really don’t see legalized sports betting in other states having a big impact on the sports betting business in Vegas.

And I have heard some mention licensing fees for data, but haven’t we already covered that in lawsuits against both the NBA and Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM)? In both cases, statistics and data were ruled to be public, not a private asset for which the leagues could charge a license fee.

In that time span, we all know that Vegas has flourished. The experience of going to Vegas is becoming less and less about putting down a sports bet and more and more about the experience of everything else. How will it be regulated? How involved will the government be? Will it be federal enforcement or on a state level?

Mr. The two biggest reasons people bet with bookies (beyond the lack of alternatives) are the convenience and the line of credit. 5: It will create greater risk for game fixing

While it seems that the question of legalizing sports betting presently is more of an if than a when, there remains a great deal of uncertainty regarding what it would look like.

Here are the top five myths about legalizing sports betting and why they’re wrong:

Furthermore, once sports betting becomes legal the negative stigma behind it will eventually disappear, which will make it a bit easier for problem gamblers to ask for help.

The thought process here is that with legalized sports betting available locally, there will be less interest in making the trek to Sin City to wager on sports. Illegal gambling is one of the factors that’s associated with gambling addiction,” Keith S. Sen. Vegas has had to reinvent itself as a place that is about more than just gambling. In the latter case, I set up a credit arrangement with Illegal Book B and we agree that I will pay every time I go over $1,000. Some are based on a time frame, while others are based on going over agreed-upon limits. There are going to be a lot of hands in the cookie jar. 2: It will create more “problem gamblers”

Myth No. 3: It will put local illegal bookies out of business

Las Vegas sports book operators are already looking to expand to other states. operation for the U.K. In order to grow the pie large enough, these conveniences must be provided to gamblers. Illegal sports betting has some characteristics that can lead to problem gambling more than legal betting would.

In the most relevant case, CBC, the parent company of CDM Sports, a fantasy provider, sued MLBAM after being denied a new fantasy sports license. This credit relationship will be hard for many gamblers to give up.

This is the easiest myth to dispel. Say I set up an account with Legal Sportsbook A. Maybe more so.

Myth No. “But for the FBI knocking on our door and notifying us about Donaghy’s betting, none of the systems that we then had in place had captured any betting by Tim Donaghy.”

I understand the argument that legalized sports betting could expose more people to gambling and the increased ease and access will create more problem gamblers, but I simply don’t buy it. When I lose this money, it’s gone, and I can’t bet until I put more money on deposit. Concerts, shows, high-end nightclubs and restaurants draw people to Vegas as much as the gambling does. There are no credit checks or margin calls until it is time for me to pay. First off, the government will only legalize if it is going to get significant revenue. In addition, asking for a percentage based on the overall handle (total amount wagered) will cut into the margin of the sports books too significantly.

The topic of federal legalization of sports betting has been brought up before, but it has gained steam since Adam Silver’s November New York Times op-ed and after Silver’s cover story in ESPN The Magazine’s Gambling Issue. This is not how most bookies work. I am concerned that the overall pie, even with online gambling, may not be large enough for the leagues to make the money they are hoping for.

The National Council on Problem Gamblers has found that problem gamblers are most often involved in illegal gambling, so moving toward a model where more gamblers are doing it legally can only help.

There is simply no way the leagues could ask for a percentage piece of gambling revenue, as this would result in a huge conflict of interest. “The Donaghy controversy also made me aware how important it is that we have a way of monitoring irregular activity on our games,” Silver said. This mirrors a similar concern that some had 25 years ago when Indian and commercial casinos began sprouting up all over the U.S.

Myth No. But let’s say I have a bad losing streak and end up down more than $1,000. Purdum, an expert on the subject, has been vocal in his belief that online sports gambling will need to be a big part of the new legalization plan, and I share his belief, as betting on a phone and computer is simply much more convenient than driving to a brick-and-mortar sports book and making a wager. This year, it is on pace to welcome a record 40 million visitors. U.S. If it’s legalized, there will be huge changes, but some assumptions are simply off.

My answer is a solid maybe. These days, most bookies provide both a phone number and website where bets can be made. bookmaking powerhouse William Hill has already set up an operation in New Jersey, and MGM CEO Jim Murren has said his company is interested in expansion.

Those who believe this simply don’t understand how sports betting with a bookie works. Second, operators will need to run a cost-effective business, which may prove difficult if there are a lot of other hands to feed besides the government.. The U.S. Whyte, executive director of the NCPG, told my ESPN colleague David Purdum.

Those betting with bookies have predetermined settlement terms. I will likely have to put money on deposit to do so

How to Bet the Kentucky Derby: A Beginner’s Guide

That number shows what the odds are that the horse will win. If your horse comes in any of those positions, you’ll get money.

If you’re sure you’ve got the winner and you only want to place a simple bet for him to come in first, go ahead and bet your money that way. Horses with lower first number (10 and down) are considered top contenders.

Betting on a horse with good odds will not pay out much money if they win. The words “first, second, and third,” are replaced by “win, place, and show.” If you think your horse is pretty good but not going to come in first, you can bet that he will “place,” — that is, come in first or second. Saturday. If you’re in it for the thrill of victory alone (and not the money), he’s a good bet.

Betting on Your Picks: “I’ll take $2 to win on the four horse, please.”

In horse racing, you need to bet on what place the horse will come in. You’re trying to hit the sweet spot: a horse with okay odds who you think has a shot at winning.

The favorite going into this weekend is California Chrome, with 5-2 odds. Say, “I’ll bet $2 on (horse’s name or number) to win.”

If you’re done with the beginner stage of betting, you can up your odds of winning by doing more complicated bets that yield bigger payouts: exactas, trifectas, and superfectas. Here’s a quick guide:

Exacta: You pick the two horses you think will come in first and second, in that order.

Trifecta: Pick the three horses you think will come in first, second, and third – in the right order.

Superfecta: You guessed it. Give that a good look to see who’s done well recently.

Look for a horse that has won most of his races by a good length. For a superfecta you pick the top four finishers in the right order. He’s dominated all the races he’s run so far and all eyes will be on him. Each horse will have a record of recent races he’s run, what place he finished, and how far ahead of the other horses he was. The Kentucky Derby is one and a quarter miles long, longer than any race these horses have run before, so the winner will need stamina.

Odds and Favorites

When you look at a race form there will be a number in parentheses after each horse’s name. Good luck racing fans!. Therefore, betting on him won’t yield a big payout. Conversely, betting on a horse with bad odds will pay out a lot of money if they do win. Or you can bet that he will “show,” — that is, come in first, second, or third. It looks something like this: Vicar’s In Trouble (20-1).

Horses with a high first number (like 20-1 or 50-1) are considered unlikely to win the race.

Here’s our guide to making sense of the Run for the Roses. You can place your bet anytime up until about 20 minutes before the race goes off at 6:24 p.m. A horse that goes into the race with 50-1 odds but comes in first place will pay out the most money to the bettor. What’s a superfecta anyway, and how do you bet one?

Now it’s off to the races. If you’re not going to be in Louisville for the big day, you can head to your local racetrack or off-track betting outlet and place a bet there.

Picking a Horse

There are 20 horses in the field for the Kentucky Derby, though as of now only 19 will be running Saturday (#11 Hopportunity was “scratched.”) All the horses are 3-year-old male thoroughbreds, which means they’re young horses with lots of talent that is still developing and not a ton of experience.

Many casual bettors will pick a horse based on name or looks, but there are better ways to judge the odds for whether a horse has a shot at winning. Like it’s name implies, the superfecta pays out big bucks if you manage to get it right.

You’ve got your mint julep and your fancy hat ready for the Kentucky Derby, but are you ready to place your bet on the horse you think will win?

Like all sports, horse racing has its own language that can be confusing to casual watchers
